Superman Mike May

Back in the mist of time I wanted to do a story on Enchanted Hills, a summer camp for blind children; a paradise situated about 60 miles from San Francisco.  I wanted to follow one small blind child for a few days and show him swimming, climbing trees, fishing, doing archery, driving a tractor; all the things that you would think a blind child could not do.  I picked a young crew-cut boy by the name of Mike May.  He was eight years old and completely blind.  He’d lost his sight at the age of three from an explosion of calcium carbide.

My first picture of the series was Mike and his mother saying goodbye as he left for camp (more about this picture later).

Mike was a winner and we became friends.  I lost touch with Mike but never forgot him or Enchanted Hills, and over 40 years later I decided to do a story on the camp itself, and this time the story would be in color for JO LEE Magazine.  Not in black and white as my first story was.

While I was at the camp, I brought up Mike May’s name.  Mike was now a director at the camp and world famous for his skill in both sports and business. Totally blind, he set the downhill ski record of 65 mph for blind athletes, won three gold medals in downhill skiing, and loved to skydive, speed skate and windsurf.  To add to the list, Mike became the CEO of the global Sendero Group, which develops GPS for the blind.

But there is incredible news?  At 51, having been blind for 43 years, a rare stem cell transplant on his right eye has restored vision to the eye.

A book about him, Crashing Through, written by Robert Kurson, has become a best seller and is in development for a movie.  Pictures I’d shot of him years ago are now proudly displayed in the story of his life.  “Mind you,” Mike said with amusement, “the best picture you did of me at Enchanted Hills 40 years ago was the shot of my mother saying goodbye as I left for camp.”  I was floored!  He was correct, for it is the best picture.

Mike has been to the White House four times to meet Presidents Reagan, Bush, Clinton and Obama.  He’s married to a lovely wife, has two sons, and travels the world on business and on lecture tours.

Among his many fans that include Stevie Wonder and Kevin Costner, he can now add another – Ray Scotty Morris.
