The new Pegasus World Cup Invitational is the world’s richest horse race, which was run on Saturday, January 28, 2017, at Gulfstream Park, Miami, Florida. The 2017 Breeders Cup Classic champion thoroughbred “Arrogate” won the spoils once again for Prince Khalid bin Abdullah Al Saud, Owner of Juddmonte Farms Inc., (of Lexington, Kentucky) receiving the $12 million purse and the stunning new crystal trophy created by Mark Raynes Roberts.
The vision of Mr. Frank Stronach, Founder and Honorary Chairman of The Stronach Group and Ms. Belinda Stronach, Chairman and President; this race is poised to take its place as the world’s premier thoroughbred racing event. Twelve owners have reserved a spot in the starting gate for $1 million USD, and the race is being run over a mile and an 1/8″ on dirt. The 12 places in the starting gate have been purchased for $1 million apiece and the profits from the entire day will be divided up among the gate owners. Meanwhile, the $12 million in entry fees make up the race’s purse.
Mr. Stronach commissioned world renowned crystal artist and designer, Mark Raynes Roberts, to create the inaugural Pegasus World Cup Invitational crystal trophy, and was inspired by the 110ft tall “Pegasus” bronze sculpture, (the world’s tallest equine sculpture) which Mr. Stronach erected at Gulfstream Park, Florida, (costing a cool $30 million) which is part of his long term strategy to attract a new audience to horse racing.
The newly designed trophy created by British born artist, Mark Raynes Roberts, stands 24″ tall and weighs over 100lbs, and combines ten specially cut pieces of optical crystal with a detailed hand-engraved Pegasus. Based in Toronto, Canada for the past 35 years, Raynes Roberts has established an enviable reputation and global following for his crystal art, and will be present on race day to see the winning Owner receive his trophy from Mr. Stronach, which is also being televised on NBC live from 4.30pm –– 6pm.
“I am very proud to have created this prestigious thoroughbred trophy and appreciate the support Mr. Stronach has shown in my crystal art for over 35 years. Mr. Stronach is an extraordinary businessman and visionary, and it is an honour to be part of this new zenith for thoroughbred horse racing in North America” commented Raynes Roberts.
The Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakeholders, together with The Stronach Group, are on the leading edge of an industry game-changing catalyst to modernize the sport and engage a new generation of fans. The inaugural running of this industry-leading thoroughbred invitational exemplifies The Stronach Group’s commitment to modernizing and elevating the sport of horse racing for the next generation of fans, while providing lucrative opportunities for thoroughbred owners.
