American Giggles

Julia Louis Dreyfuss this year joined an elite club — recipients of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. The award has been running since 1998 and obviously some legendary American comedians have been selected each year. Here are a few one-liners from some of the chosen…. (obviously very droll and chucklesome and favourites are difficult.)

Lily Tomlin (2003 recipient)

“Why is it that when we talk to God we’re said to be praying, but when God talks to us we’re schizophrenic?”

Steve Martin (2005 recipient)

“Before you criticize a man, walk a mile in his shoes.  That way, when you do criticize him, you’ll be a mile away and have his shoes.”

Whoopi Goldberg (2001 recipient)

“I don’t have pet peeves; I have whole kennels of irritation.”

Carl Reiner (2000 recipient)

“A lot of people like snow.  I find it an unnecessary freezing of water.”
