Chapter 1

The Tumultous Times Complicate our Investments

We live in tumultuous times for investing in the stock market.  Geopolitics on the market has always had an influence but perhaps never more than at present.  The ongoing   wrangle over the United States-China trade dispute emphatically proves the point.  In recent times, when the outlook for trade peace looked positive, the market rallied.  When the outlook dimmed, the market tanked.

Other hot-button issues affect the market, including the ongoing debate over interest rates and the possibility of war between the United States and Saudi Arabia against Iran, (a fear that is over-stated).

Meanwhile, our day-to-day environment places a huge priority on instant gratification.  We expect fast service from the retailers we patronize.  We are regularly offered on-demand television, one-click shopping and even near-instant approval of mortgages loans.  Contemporary wisdom is that many people will not wait for more than a few seconds for a website to load and if that does not happen fast enough they surf elsewhere. m For some, this need for instant gratification carries over into their investment expectations.

Moreover, many of us have to deal with a financial concept that our forebears never even heard of: longevity risk, which refers to the possibility that an individual will outlive his or her financial resources.

And for some, their resources never completely recovered from the crash of 2008-2009. For that and other reasons, some of them psychological as well as socio-economic, many are resisting established traditions such as retirement age. ‘Retirement planning’ has taken on a whole new meaning during the past decade. That also has implications for their investments.

Even ‘Estate Planning’ has become more intricate. given lifestyle changes such as divorce, re-marriage and eldercare.

*  In future chapters  of The Glamorous Life of an Author, I will focus on these and other concerns and hope to help you clear away the confusion.
